Radioactive Roadtrippin’

Project summary:
A project by Natasha Bajema, a nuclear scientist, Radioactive Roadtrippin’ is a video series of Natasha’s experiences visiting atomic weapons sites across the United States. As the creative design lead, I was to create a visual illustration style, color themes, logo, and animation work for a YouTube series about her travels across the country visiting nuclear weapons sites around the United States. The branding for Radioactive Roadtripping (R&R) was inspired by National park maps and the fun and upbeat tone of her adventure across the United States in a camper.

Branding concept

Inspired by the design for the National Parks postcards, stickers, and posters, Radioactive Roadtrippin’s takes that same charm and familiarity and flips it on its head by embedding nuclear missiles into the landscape making a once serene outdoors scene in a dangerous, untrustworthy space.

The logo marks are designed to look like badges or patches that are also collectors items at National Parks’ gift shops, with a variety of landscapes stacked in the background representing all of the different locations that Natasha Bajema will be exploring and documenting in her series.

PROTOTYPING

Animation goals: Version 1

In Radioactive Roadtrippin’, the purpose of the animations was to be tools for guiding the viewer through complex information and to give the branding a more approachable tone, as much of the content is rooted in heavy, sometimes dark, history.

This was the first pass at my first full-length animation with script and voiceover.

PROTOTYPING

Next iterations

As a part of my animation development, I am revisiting previous projects and reworking animations to make them more advanced in stylization, technique, and file organization. For the next version of Radioactive Roadtripping, I have taken a character animation course created by the Motion Design School and I am applying those skills and concepts to an updated version of the characters.
